Brown Book, Turning

February 26, 2008

I have been on a reading marathon for the past two weeks!!  I am still trying to get all the books that I bought at the Scholastic Book Sale read. (my husband doesn’t know how much money I spent!).  However, you can only read so many picture books and then it is time to move on to a few good chapter books and informational books.

I am enjoying reading.  My only problem is that when I start a book I find it hard to put it down until I have finished it.  Doing dishes, laundry and cleaning the house are forgotten. I may need to hang out a “HELP WANTED" sign before this class ends in May.

I had a good weekend of reading.  I enjoyed several picture books; one I thought was especially cute -- There Was A Coyote Who Swallowed a Flea by Jennifer Ward.   I also read the book Becoming Naomi León Outlaw by Pam Muñoz Ryan.  This book is one of the Land of Enchantment children’s books to read and vote on.  I would recommend it to anyone.  On Sunday I started Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff.  This book is an historical fiction and the first book that I have read that made me want to cry.  The book won a Newbery Award and I can see why.  Now I need to head-off to the library and pick up another selection of picture books.  I am hoping some of the students at Heights will have finished the books they checked on the Land of Enchantment Book List, so I can get another one to read this weekend.

I started the book The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell, but I have had to leave Wonapalei stranded there in the middle of the book.  The book lies across the back of my couch just waiting for me to pick it up and move forward with Wonapalei’s life story.  Science has claimed all my attention this weekend.  My leisurely weekends of reading left me procrastinating about my science-learning center.  I would like to sit down and read just one chapter, but I know that I would not be satisfied and would spend to much time buried in the pages.  My science center desperately needs my attention.  So hopefully I can return to my reading soon.

Reading is all I do in between working on projects for science.  I just finished Stink and the Incredible Super Galactic Jawbreaker by Megan McDonald.  It is not my favorite book out of the three that I have read for the Land Of Enchantment Bood Award.  I also read The Teacher's Funeral: A Comedy in Three Parts by Richard Peck and Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan.  Becoming Naomi Leon was my favorite, but The Teacher's Funeral comes in a close second.

I have also been reading a lot of informational books about habitats for my thematic unit in science.  Sorta kills two birds with one stone, but that really doesn't sound good.  I have enjoyed reading and those few that I find my mind wondering on the second page, I just close and move on to another.

This week I decided to read more picture books.  I enjoy going to the Farmington Library and scanning through all the books.  I usually choose my picture books by the cover.  Does it look interesting.  I think brighly colored book covers draw me in.  I enjoy picking out 10 to 15 books, getting in bed at night and reading.  Just wish my grandchildren were hear to read to.  I have also been reading informational books that go with my thematic unit on habitats.  I found several different authors that I liked.  I really like the habitat books written by Carol Lindeen.  These are great resources for students to read while study habitats.

With my thematic unit finished I have been able to start reading genres in science fiction.  I really thought this genre was my list favorite, but with the help of the librarian at Heights I am finding that it is hard to put the books down.  She recommended a book called Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix that I really enjoyed.  Now I have learned that this is a series of books.  As soon as I finish The Giver I will be back to reading the second one in the series Among the Imposters.  I can hardly wait to find out what is happening to Luke since he left his family.

I am still reading science fiction genre.  I enjoyed reading Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix so much that I am now reading other books in this collection.  I have read Among the Imposters and Among the Betrayed.  I have also read some picture books.  One of my favorites was A Mama for Owen.  This picture book is based on a true story.  I believe I am close to reading my 100 books.  I have really enjoyed going to the library and scanning the many books.  I think that out of all the books that I read there were only two that I started and did not finish.  Lots of books to read for this semester, but it has been very enjoyable.
