I was glad that I had some background knowledge about Special Education before taking this class.  The class, practicum experiences, and my prior working experience with the special education teachers at Heights Middle School will be beneficial in helping me recognize student’s strengths and needs in the classroom.

The practicum experience allowed me to see first-hand how important it is to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each student.  While it is important to find strategies that can help the students below grade level succeed, it is equally as important to find methods to challenge those students that are above their grade level.

One of the most important lessons that I learned from this class is how important it is to get to know the student and their family.  In order to really help every student learn it must be a combined effort of the teacher, family, and child.  The more we know about each of our student’s need, the better we as “educationalist” will be at providing an appropriate learning environment to meet the diverse needs of every student.

The students will write a description and give two details about their picture.

The students will use correct sentence structure; capitalization and punctuation.

The lesson can be modified by giving students a pre-drawn hand or assist student(s) in tracing their hand.  Students that finish the lesson before others will be able to do independent study and reading on a selection of books from the classroom library.

Standard(Strand):  Writing and Speaking for expression:  Students will communicate

            effectively through speaking and writing.

Benchmark:  C. Demonstrate competence in the skills and strategies               of the writing process.

                     3.  Write descriptions of familiar persons, places, or objects.

Teaching/Learning Process

I.     Introduction

·      The teacher will introduce the mini-lesson by drawing a hand turkey on the white board.

·      The teacher will explain that turkeys are a Thanksgiving tradition.

·      The teacher will model writing a sentence that describes the turkey.

Example:   Tom Turkey is happy.  Tom Turkey is fat.

·      The teacher will model writing a sentence that gives two details about the turkey.

Example:  Tom Turkey has brown feathers and two legs.

·      The teacher will have students discuss additional descriptive words and details and write them on the board.

II.   Concept Focused

·      The teacher will have the students write a sentence that describes their turkey.

·      The teacher will have the students write a sentence that gives two details about the turkey they draw and color.

·      The teacher will have students focus on sentence structure; capitalization and punctuation.

III.         Closure

The teacher will have each student read the description of their turkey to her and

the other students in the group.  The teacher will be able to assess student under-

standing of the lesson from the writing assignment.

IV. Accommodations

The teacher will provide handout that provides an area for drawing and writing.

The teacher will assist students with poor motor skills by tracing student hand or

provide students that need additional help with a pre-drawn hand.  The teacher

will provide a safe environment that enables all students to see whiteboard, while

the teacher models and talks about sentence structure.

V.   Supplemental Activities

The teacher will provide books about Thanksgiving in reading centers and to

take home.  The teacher will provide a variety of sentence strips that model writing in the writing center for students that need additional help with writing skills.  Students will be given additional sentence strips to use to copy sentences to practice writing skills.

  VI.     Assessment / Evaluation

Informal Assessment:        The teacher will assess students writing skills from

the writing assignment.  The teacher will check that students have included one

descriptive sentence and a sentence that includes two details using correct

sentence structure.  The teacher will allow students to share their drawings and

read what they have written to describe the turkey they drew.
